Let the fresh produce start rolling in....

Thanks to Mother Nature, as well as our hard working farmers at Dry Dock Farms and the International Institute here in St. Louis, the fresh stuff is already coming our way!

If you aren't aware, we are now getting some produce from the International Institute. That means that an urban garden is growing food naturally, without the aid of chemicals, and selling them to an urban market. This is what eating locally is all about! Bringing healthy, fresh food into the community, and look how little distance it has to travel before it ends up on YOUR table.

Based on conversations with our farmers, this is what I expect us to have on Thursday:

-Asparagus
-Kale
-Collards
-Herbs
-Heads of lettuce
-Beet Greens
-Heads of romaine
-Swiss Chard
-Wavy Green Kale
-Green onions
-Baby Beets
-Spinach
-Cherry Bell Radishes

If you haven't been coming to the market recently, this really would be the week to make a stop. Let's enjoy this gift of early season fresh veggies and greens, as well as this beautiful weather.

Of course our freezer will be stocked with meat... time to get the grill going if you haven't already. And plenty of canned goods, jellies and jams!

Hope to see you between 11-5 on Thursday!

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

The sun will come out... TODAY!

Hello, City Greeners!

Market will be open tomorrow, Thursday, from 11-5! As is the same every week, I won't know exactly what we'll be getting until it arrives in the morning. But I will try to give you some idea of what should come in so you can plan accordingly. We're hoping to have:

Green onions
Swiss Chard
Kale
Asian Greens
Salad Mix
Heads of lettuce

As always, you can rest assured that our produce is as fresh as possible and has been grown naturally without the use of chemicals, pesticides, etc.

NEW THIS WEEK:

Black Beans! Grown naturally at Bellews Creek Farm in Hillsboro, MO

REASONS TO EAT BLACK BEANS:

I came across this website which has some great information on the health benefits of eating black beans- take a look if you have some time http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=2

If you don't, here's the summary:

-High in protein
-No sodium
-High in antioxidants
-High in Fiber
-Rich in Molybdenum (helps break down sulfites found in food)
-High in folate
-MAY assist in weight loss

We will have a fresh assortment of our Jellies and Jams, as well as a meat fridge stocked with all of our tasty pork products and grass-fed, free-range ground beef! We hope to see you this Thursday if you have the chance :)

City Greens Produce... Open Thursday from 11-5!

Hello Loyal Shoppers!

As always, thanks for your dedication to our market. The winter version of City Greens has remained as busy as we were in the Spring and Summer, and it is YOUR support that is allowing us to continue supplying healthy, local produce to a community that truly needs it. Thanks :)

Our meat fridge is fully stocked this week! All of our staple pork products are in, including bacon, brats, Italian and Andouille Sausage, ground pork, pork sausage, ham steaks, and pork chops. Have you tried our grass-fed, grass-finished ground beef? If not, the returns have been very positive- so now is the week. At 4.50/lb., for that type of quality meat, it's hard to beat! ** We will have our Amish raised chickens in NEXT
WEEK**

NEW THIS WEEK: Not necessarily new, but back from a hiatus... BROWN RICE (non-GMO)... WHEATBERRIES... and our very popular WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR. Come early and snag some large TURNIPS for something fresh this week, as well as SHIITAKE and OYSTER mushrooms! And yes, still got some squash for ya... more spaghetti squash... And plenty of eggs to feed you and your family.

We have a fresh stock of our organic, fresh pastas in from Mangia Pasta. Buy some Marcoot Jersey Creamery cheese to go along with it and make a City Greens Mac 'n Cheese!

What can I do with wheat berries you might ask? How about taking that, along with City Greens organic pecans, and making this tasty looking dish:

(from drgrandmasrecipes.com):

If your parsley is multiplying wildly like mine this is a delicious healthy way to take advantage of that – or just purchase it at the market; it’s fairly inexpensive. Your Mediterranean kitchen will be emitting aromas that will draw hungry appetites. If you want to make this recipe serve more, just add more wheat berries; it will work nicely with up to double the wheat berries. This recipe serves as a vegetable serving, starch serving, and a protein serving; and it has a very nice flavor. You can use the pesto with pasta, fish, breads, crackers or vegetables – be creative.

Ingredients:
2 cups cooked wheat berries or See directions below.
3 cups water if wheat berries are not already cooked.
¾ cup pecans
2 cups parsley (packed)
1/3 cup grated Parmesan
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon salt, or as desired
1 tablespoon minced garlic
Directions:
If you don’t have cooked refrigerated or frozen wheat berries, cook 1 ¼ cup raw wheat berries in 3 cups water for about an hour to 1 ¼ hour, until desired tenderness. Toast pecans in a skillet, until just beginning to brown. Combine all ingredients except wheat berries in a food processor: process until smooth. Stir wheat berries and pesto together and carefully heat over a low heat in a saucepan or in a covered casserole dish in the microwave – the microwave is an easier method.

FYI- Wheat berries are excellent providers of dietary fiber. The nutrients are left untouched since they are not processed and provide us with folic acid, protein, B-complex vitamins and vitamin E. The wheat grass acts as a cleanser and is rich in Vit.A,B, C and E along with other minerals. It is supposed to have anti-aging capabilities.

Come in and check out our pancake recipe using our whole wheat flour!

We hope to see you at City Greens on THURSDAY from 11-5!!!!

Thursday, February 2, 2012

60's in February? Come celebrate!

Come early if possible, and celebrate these unseasonably warm temperatures by purchasing some FRESH GREENS! All the regular items are in as well, so we hope you'll join us between 11-5 :)

Thursday... City Greens Day!

Hello Shoppers!

Did you get a chance to try our rainbow colored carrots last week?? If not, give them a chance today!

Oh and by the way, Purple and Red are the original carrot colours, the orange not taking hold until the 16th century when the Dutch created a carrot in honour of their royal family, the House of Orange.

And, as usual, our canned staples are in as well... including the return of Freddie Lee James Ghetto Sauce (a BBQ for all occasions)...
